Let’s be honest here, people are not going to stay in camps forever! They need to go HOME and for them to go home the peace troops should secure the area and for the area to be secure, the conflict needs to stop. What should be done to stop Darfur?

Kizzie…. I see only 2 scenarios that will stop the genocide in Darfur.
The first scenario involves 3 steps. (1) all Arab/Islamic nations have to condemn the actions of the Sudanese government and call on them to stop the genocide, particularly Saudia Arabia. This can be done starting through the 22-member nation Arab League. It didn’t help that on March 28-29th 2006, Sudan hosted the 18th Arab League Summit in Khartoum and there was no resolution to stop the genocide. It sent the wrong message, first to hold the summit in Sudan, and second, not to denounce their human rights abuses. (2) the deployment of a multi-national Arab/Islamic force in the area. Sending in the U.N. or A.U. forces gives the Sudanese government and other extremists, the excuse to promote this action as a war on Islam and Muslims. (3) all African, Arab and Muslim states should cut economic and diplomatic ties with Sudan and also China, until they stop the genocide. China is key in this regard.
The second scenario is for NATO or a European community force to deploy into Darfur to protect the people and also enforce a no-fly zone over the area. This is of course very controversial but it worked for the Kurds in Northern Iraq when Saddam was still in power and that area is still stable today.
ok, good suggestions BUT 1- The Sudanese Government did start the conflict but they lost control now. The government can’t stop the conflict now, they stopped attacking towns but the janjaweed don’t need orders or money for the govt. They have it all. If the government wants to stop the conflict, they should get all sides to sign a peace agreement. Even if they did sign a peace agreement, the biggest problem in Darfur is “security”. How can the govt ensure security in the Darfur region?
AU and UN troops should be allowed to work together to secure the area so, people can go back to their homes.
Darfurians can’t stay in the refugee camps. Why? hygiene issues, people are dependant seeing that they are living on food aid, children should go back to school and things should go back to normal!
I say secure the region and make the people go home.
-I didn’t understand the second point.
ok, the US and other western countries already imposed economic sanctions on Sudan ( the US did that in the 1990′s) so, Sudan’s only allies now are Arab and some African countries and ofcourse China. If the Arab and African countries and China cut their Ëconomic relations with the Sudan the economy is going to collapse and the world will have to deal with another humanitarian crises ” the collapse of sudan”. You will not only have Darfur then the whole country will be starving, umemployed and poorer than they already are( 1990′s all over again).
Chinese-Sudanese relations did alot for Sudan. Last summer when I was there, I saw alot of change. I know that the conflict in Darfur should be stopped right now and the govt should do more to stop it but we can’t afford losing China or other allies now. Sudan’s economy is one of the fastest growing economies in the world now but we have “feet of clay”. The country is still poor and for crying out loud we pay WAR TAXES! So, imposes “more” sanctions on Sudan might pressure the government but it will severely disadvantage the people.
“(2) the deployment of a multi-national Arab/Islamic force in the area. Sending in the U.N. or A.U. forces gives the Sudanese government and other extremists, the excuse to promote this action as a war on Islam and Muslims”.
By this I mean…. remove the U.N. and A.U. troops from Darfur and replace them with a multi-national force only from Arabic and Muslim countries.
One of the reasons given by those who didn’t want economic sanctions against apartheid South Africa in the past, was that it would hurt the Africans in that country. I don’t know if it had that much of an effect on them as they were already suffering. However the sanctions did help end apartheid. I doubt economic sanctions against Sudan will hurt those in Darfur who are already being exterminated, but it may cause the government to start bringing the janjaweed under control by force, if they want their economic sucess to continue.
Yes, I’m sure it will hurt the rest of the Sudanese population.
Sudan is already under severe economic sanctions so, it is going to make it ever harder for the people.
Darfur is an ethnic conflict, you can’t solve an ethnic conflict by imposing sanctions or by UN and AU troops. You have to solve the conflict first, get all sides to sign the peace agreemtent then secure the place.
The government is not trying hard enough to get all sides to sign, they keep postponing things.
