A friend of mine who worked with Ray Charles was horrified at the depiction of Charles as a simple man, and the film as a celebration of Charles’ success. Some of the things depicted in the film happened, yes, he said, but that didn’t make the film true.

The real story of Charles’ life as my friend saw it was Charles trusted inner circle robbing him left and right. This would have complicated the black man triumphs over long odds in a world stacked against him trajectory that won all those academy awards.
