FreeSlave,

Thank You. We must do just that. I find that too many African Americans, blacks etc... in this country are putting all their eggs in this one basket. However, when the bottom of this basket falls out, what will we then do?

Will we go wondering yet again?

Obama has not, will not and seemingly cannot outline a black agenda nor keep his blackness in tact while winning the presidency.

I am an Obama supporter but I know much, much better.

We cannot depend on government since the head will be black. We must depend on ourselves and our community. We must become interdependent. We must take the right stand.

An Obama presidency, in my opinion, will be more of a reason why we must take this stand.

Also have you notice that Obama has to prove himself to white voters of all classes, jewish voters, latino voters and even Native American voters promosing to them all what he is going to do for their specific group. He must prove to them that he is for them, they must be comfortable with him and he must even prove that he is one of "them".

Excellent post, my brother, excellent post.

I take exception to Eddie's dismisssal of Obama's black consciousness. He is highly conscious of his blackness, how it helps and hurts him in his endeavor. Thus the need to off-load his blackness, strategically, when it isn't serving him in specific circumstances. His eyes are on the prize and he will and MUST compromise. Chameleons make the best politicians.

I can guarantee you that he completely understands how to play the audience required to succeed. He's got US sewn up and we'll forgive the backflips he does for the white man. And its the white folks who he must attract - through guilt relief, or feigning likeness or compatibility - in order to get what he wants.

Obviously, his whole objective is personal with only a tangential relationship to black folks, to a explicitly stated black agenda.

What is the "black/African American/or whatever the fuck we are calling ourselves these days" agenda????

Where is our black Congress like the European Women's Congress above?

We have this jive ass State of Black America crap where stupid ass talking heads shuck and jive - and come up with nothing. Where is our Continental Congress, our Liberation Congress where we create a plan for the Black Nation???

Obama will likely have no part in it, so while we marvel or curse at the spectacle of a black man running the racist political gauntlet: we sit and watch, rather than focus, plan, strategize, organize.

If not now, when?

Having black skin does not necessarily translate into "black consciousness", especially being brought up in a white family household. Neither does having black skin in America equate with black skin being born in Africa. As an African-American stationed in Germany during the 1960s, I discovered Africans living in Germany looked upon black troops with the same disdain that African-Americans viewed native Africans. We, having grown up on Tarzan (and the likes), thought ourselves to be superior. On the other hand, Africans thought of themselves as superior to us, because they still maintained their native language and culture, their heritage and dress, and held their tradition as being descendants of kings and princes. Obviously, what the white colonizers did to us, they did to them also. Although we both had black skins, we were alienated from each other by colonial conditioning.

Barack Obama is black, only in skin tone, not consciousness. So, why would we expect him to be like "us"? We can only accept him on the basis of his declared candidacy and platform and not on the basis of our idealism of blackness.

Well written. Barack is the definition of double consciousness: understanding one's place as a Black man while also being an American citizen. The nation within a nation. From the looks of it, it becomes increasingly hard to have dual citizenship in both.
