Good Morning,
I can relate to your post although my Mom didn't give me alot of grief on my locks, Black folks with some hiring power did while I was working in corporate America. I am disapointed at Black folks willingness sometimes to shirk diversity. Every Black person has got a least a cousin who has locked hair, an Afrikan based spiritual center, a certain political view or mindset or a religion that isn't the prevelent AME/Baptist?/COGIC church view. Some of us have Muslims who are just as conservative if not more so than our other family members yet they are still involved. I wrote two posts on my blog Knukka where are you from? parts 1 and 2 We don't see these so called Black Conservatives involved in the Black Community just being critical and dismissive of it.

Your mom appears to be a vibrant and headstrong individual! And although you both have differences, there can still be attempts to embrace each other's differences- they are what make you, "you." Mostly everyone that follows some type of faith or spirituality feels that he or she has the right philosophy- they are right and the next person is wrong. What happens if we find out at the end of it all, that we "all" had a little piece to add to the puzzle that would form what is really true and right? Sometimes I feel this way, and I do my best not to judge another for their beliefs and decisions. I am a Christian, and I believe that God sent His son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins, so that we may have another chance at eternal life because He loved us so. Now, although I believe this with all my heart, I would never make another person feel that there religion is beneath mine. I can tell that despite it all, there is love between you and your mother, and that's what matters most. Thank you for sharing.
