I am especially concerned about the following comment, taken from an earlier blog: “The hopelessly misguided (or deliberately obstructionist and vindictive) movement to make the families of crime victims “part of the process” has injected an element of revenge into our judicial process that is poisoning criminal law.”
We live in a sick society when “revenge” is the motivating factor in our judicial process! There is most definitely reasonable doubt in this case, as has been specifically described. No proof exists and the other man, now identified as the real killer, had possession of an identical weapon! It seems the entire system is being driven by the vindictive and sadistic craving for revenge by the mother of Mr. Mark MacPhail. Have the police even investigated the claims and testimony that another man was the actual killer? Don’t they care? Jimmy Carter does not take cases lightly. Does NO ONE care what the former President of the United States has to say about this case? The mother of Mr. MacPhail is misguided, has no desire to see absolute justice done in this case, does not care about proof or evidence, and should be denied her desired “revenge!” She is abnormally “wedded” to some type of execution. What would she say if Troy Davis were executed and the real killer confessed the following week??
We need to study Matthew 5 and verse 7. Jesus taught that we are to be merciful! Yes, we know that God laid down circumstances for executions. However, God Himself applied capital punishment judiciously and with great mercy. Moses murdered an Egyptian and was not punished, and continued as leader. David committed both murder and adultery, and his punishment was the death of his baby son. Afterwards, David was permitted to live a normal life, have children with his stolen wife, and remain as King! God even stated that this man “was a man after His (God’s) own heart,” something said of no other man! I say to the mother of Mr. MacPhail, “Lady, clean out the bitterness from your heart, cease the vindictiveness, soften your heart, and let in some of God’s love, mercy, kindness, and forgiveness.”
