There is an excellent and informative documentary series on Aljazeera English entitled: Africa: States of Independence. It looks at African countries that are celebrating 50 years of independence from European colonial rule and what factors have led to the progress… or the lack of progress… which have been achieved during this time. This documentary is in six parts and it appears that it will be available via Aljazeera English’s website (click on the link above).
I recently subscribed to the channel and the programming and documentaries are fantastic. They have opened up a new world of information to me. I now get most of my news, particular international news (which includes USA) from there. Also check out the other programs for indepth analysis, as well as more global perspectives on a variety of subjects that will never make it to your CNN, FOXNews, MSNBC, or even PBS and BBC.
I don’t know about you, but the incessant US media yakking about Obama, American politricks, as well as it’s fascination with Glenn Beck and the latest celebrity infidelity, is neither informative, enlightening nor interesting.

Thank you for bringing it to our attention. I would have missed it otherwise. Al Jazeera is an alternative viewpoint in a western dominated media. And thank the lord for that.
And again, thank you-I’ll be watching tonight
Al Jazeera is nothing but terrorist tool for Arabs. It has always been their to brainwash black Africans in Sudan to deceive themselves thinking they are Arabs while they’re not, they’ve been and they won’t be.
For long, the impact of Al Jazeera on Africa has been negative. Even Sudanese media have stupidly aped to by ignoring Africa where they belong. In their coverage every prime news is about Middle east!
When they deal with African matters they refer to it as if they don’t belong to Africa.
@ mugumo munene
Your rant is totally incorrect. Their primetime news is not only about the middle east and their coverage of Africa is extensive and informative.
To each their own.
Sorry mr asabagna for misunderstanding my points. The fact of the matter is, if you can do some more research, that black Sudanese like Omar Bashir are killing their colleagues simply because they believe they are Arabs. And Al Jazeera has always drums this into their minds. Try to rake more on Sudan and Al Jazeera, you’ll find the same.
Thanks
Thank you for the alternate news source! Does anyone feel that africa should NOT acknowledge their independence date? Because to acknowledge the independence would be to acknowledge being the lackey (sp) for europeans for a long time?
Alco, check RFI ( RADIO FRANCE INTERNATIONAL). http://www.english.rfi.fr/
They have excellent articles about Africa: 50 years of independence. It has been there for quite a while.
Cheers.
Patrick-Bernard, thanks for the information.
Blessings!
Thanks, I’ll make sure to tune in to the rest of them!
I just noticed the comment by Mugumo Munene. Al Jazeera does provide excellent coverage on Africa. Also, their perspective is a nice balance and quite different from CNN.
However, it is true that serious news on Africa is scant. I rarely, rely on local African media due to self-censorship. Believe me, I know about this one. Blogs and especially Global Voices are excellent.
Personally, I think that, beside Al-Jazeera, RFI and Jeune Afrique (unfortunately, I believe it is French only) are among the best. Also, BBC is good and quite neutral but can be quite shallow.
Cheers
